Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Position Summary:  Leads the Cytology Lab Assistants in the processing functions of the Cytology accessioning section. Coordinates the work flow for the employees in the processing operation.  Performs complex cytological procedures requiring a high degree of skill and knowledge.

Principal Responsibilities:

I.          Typical

Ø Assists with CPL general Cytology supervision in the development of policies and procedures in the processing functions of the Cytology department

Ø Accountable  for cytology processing  personnel performance, discipline and scheduling of duties

Ø Performs complex, special and new cytological procedures

Ø Responsible for procurement and maintenance of supplies

Ø May instruct and train personnel as necessary

Ø Accountable for the quality control in the processing functions of the department to include and maintain supportive data for regulatory compliance

Ø Assists with completion of reports and maintenance of records

Ø Accountable for the maintenance of all the Cytology processing equipment

Ø Accountable for expediting nightly quality control stain checks in a timely manner

            Ø Accountable for the Cytyc Imagers to be loaded at time specified 

            Ø Overseeing the completion of Cytology specimens including distributing specimens and                        requisitions to the correct department(s)

Ø Performs other related duties as required

Ø Assists with interviews and selection of personnel

  • Attends meetings and special courses when advised

Scope:   Accountability for the efficiency and safety in the performance of cytology processing procedures, instructions and other functions.  Responsible for all the functions of  cytology processing..  Promotes quality relations and creates supportive climate by serving as a role model.  Respects and maintains the confidentiality of information relative to the laboratory.  Adheres to and enforces prescribed laboratory safety policies and regulations.  Works independently with minimal direction.  Functions as a liaison between the Cytology department and the Clinical Laboratory processing manager. Operates general laboratory equipment, including, telephones, computer keyboards and all the Cytology processing equipment.  Effectively communicates via written, verbal, face-to-face, telephone and computer methods. Maintains effective communication with the Cytology General Supervisor and the Cytology Technical Supervisor

Education:

High School Diploma/GED

Experience:

Minimum: training or experience in a laboratory setting

Preferred - two years of laboratory training or experience in specimen collection and processing

Accuracy:  Positive accuracy in diagnostic cytology procedures.  Proficient in all duties.

Reporting Relationship:

Reports to the Cytology Processing Supervisor

Physical demands:  Requires light to medium lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.  Requires manipulation of tools, objects and equipment using the following physical motions: pushing, pulling, lifting, reaching above shoulder height, grasping with both hands, pinching with thumb and forefinger, twisting with hand and wrist, climbing under, lifting up, lifting down and reaching under.  Routinely requires visual discrimination of color, size and shape. 

Environmental demands:  Works in temperature controlled environment. .  May be required to operate fire and safety equipment or follow other safety procedures in an emergency situation.  May be required to work with time constraints and crisis situations.
