Location: GCMC - MAIN CAMPUS

Work Schedule: Evenings

Work Type: Time 1.0 FTE (80 Hours  Bi-Weekly) Every other weekend and every other holiday

JOB SUMMARY:

In accordance with the standards of care established by the State Board of Nursing, a registered nurse is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation. A registered nurse also directs and guides patient teaching and activities of ancillary personnel.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

*1. Initiates plan of care by assessing physiological, psychosocial and age-specific needs of patient initially upon admission.

*2. Reassesses patient's need each shift or as needed on an ongoing basis.

*3. Receives report and prepares patient assignments based on patient acuity and skill mix.

*4. Implements clinical and technical plan of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.

*5. Documents nursing intervention and patient responses, effectiveness and complications and communicates this information to peers and physicians.

*6. Uses multidisciplinary resources for treatment and consultation.

*7. Respects the rights, dignity and confidentiality of the patient, serves as patient advocate as necessary.

*8. Functions in accordance with the State Nurse Practice Act and CMC nursing policy and procedure.

*9. Assesses patient and family knowledge of health status and evaluates their ability to understand and participate in the plan of care.

*10. Involves patient and family in setting realistic objectives related to discharge planning regarding health status and plan of care.

*11. Provides and modifies patient instruction/education to meet patient's cultural, physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

*12. Initiates referrals to other healthcare providers or resource agencies.

*13. Provides age appropriate and culturally sensitive nursing care.

*14. Demonstrates critical reflective thinking and problem solving skills.

*15. Precepts and mentors new staff in a professional, positive manner.

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

Must be able to speak, read, write and understand the English language to effectively communicate with predominantly English-speaking population.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

For Registered Nurses with less than five (5) years work experience as an RN, a BSN degree is required or enrollment in a BSN program within 12 months of hire date with BSN degree completed within 4 years of hire date is required.

For Registered Nurses with more than 5 years of work experience as an RN in an acute/inpatient capacity, a BSN degree is not required.

For current Geisinger Registered Nurses who transfer into this position, BSN degree is preferred.

Current BLS healthcare provider. ACLS within one (1) year of date of hire. PRNs must have ACLS at date of hire. Experience preferred; willing to train new graduates. PRN's must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience.

Current RN seniority is to be recognized.
